Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a small, sleepy town. The West Island can be confusing to those unfamiliar to its significance. It is often believed that it's an island to the that lies west of Montreal However, it's actually the West Island encompasses everything between the two cities that are Lachine and West. Amanda Brugel's hometown is often mentioned, but her brief stay wasn't. Brugel lived in Courtice near Oshawa, Ontario. Early ambitions were to become a dancer. However, a growth increase caused her to surpass her dance partners she had. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet and 1 inch." When I outgrew my male companions, I quit. Many ex-dancers switch to acting. In the case of Brugel, it was the encouragement from her drama teacher at her high school which pushed her to take the step she wanted. The teacher was the one who advised her to audition to play the character of Anne in their annual school production. After trying out the role, she was chosen as the leading lady for Anne of Green Gables. The show led her to receive an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theatre Program which she graduated with the Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in 2000. The career of Brugel spans more than 20 years and she's been in over 60 productions, both on big screens as well as smaller screens. Her most notable role was as Rita (pictured beneath) on The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel was the sole Canadian part of the cast during Season 1 of the series, and only seen occasionally.
